Implementing the National Standards and Outcomes in Physical Education Workshop
SHAPE America's national physical education standards define what a student should know and be able to do as a result of a physical education program. The Implementing the National Standards and Outcomes workshops are designed to help teachers better understand and apply the newly revised national standards and grade-level outcomes.
Implementing the National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for Elementary Physical Education (full or half day)
This workshop is designed to help teachers of elementary physical education better understand and apply the newly revised national standards and grade-level outcomes. Information gained from the workshop will assist teachers in curriculum design and assessment of student learning in elementary physical education. Through both cognitive and psychomotor engagement, workshop participants will experience the grade-level outcomes leading to mature patterns of skill execution and their application in gymnastics, dance and games environments.
Implementing the National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for Secondary Physical Education (full or half day)
Participants will learn about planning and implementing lessons to meet the SHAPE America National Standards and Secondary Grade-Level Outcomes. The workshop will include information and interactive activities that enhance understanding of the grade-level outcomes, including how to use them to teach for content and skill mastery, and implementing them in lesson planning. Participants will leave the workshop with the knowledge and skills to effectively use the Lesson Planning for Secondary Physical Education: Meeting the National Standards &Grade-Level Outcomes book as a critical resource for teaching.
Standards-Based Learning and Grading in Physical Education (full day)
This is an interactive workshop targeted specifically for school districts interested in the process of implementing standards=based learning and grading. With learning as the big picture, the workshop will put reporting of student progress toward proficiency (grading) into perspective. The principles that guide standards-based grading will be explored. The workshop will be tailored to the specific needs of the district, based on where the district is in the standards-based learning process. The overall process begins with a foundation of physical literacy. The next step will move teachers to planning for instruction using a standards-based instructional design model. Professional Learning Networks (PLN) will collaborate in decisions about proficiency scales and the accompanying descriptions. With a vision for moving students toward a lifetime of choices, the PLN will focus on establishing power standards or "need to know" standards. Assessment tools will be selected or created with rubrics that align with district proficiency scales. The workshop will also cover ideas for communicating the process with all stakeholders (district staff, students and families).
